280 Daily: The perfect solution for your simple journaling needs

A few days ago Melissa showed me this awesome little app called 280 Daily. It’s a very simple program that stores data very similarly to twitter; that is, you’re allowed 280 characters (vs 140 with twitter) to express whatever you need to express for the day. You can also attach photos to these entries.

The difference between this and twitter is that this 280 Daily isn’t designed to communicate or share with others. It’s solely for your own person journaling needs.

A few years ago Mel and I started keeping a simple journal with one goal in mind: try and think of one thing every day that you love/appreciate/remember/found funny/etc about being with each other. We call them 365 Mel/365 Denny, and we break out the journals on our anniversary and reminisce over the good times we’ve had. It’s a very simple way to stay grounded and maintain a healthy, loving relationship.

The problem is, it’s harder than you’d think to come up with something every single day. And when I do think of it, if I don’t write it down or log it immediately then I eventually forget to do it later or forget what it was that I was going to log for the day.

I’ve been searching high and low for a quick, private way to log these memories in the moment/as they’re happening, and up until now a private twitter account was the best solution I could come up with, with one exception: 140 characters is just too limiting. This forced me to use a private Tumblr, which is at the opposite end of the spectrum: it’s overkill for my needs.

When Mel showed me 280 Daily, I immediately began trying to use it for my 365 Mel. I’m happy to report that so far it’s given me just the freedom I need without too much extra bloat.

This isn’t a killer app for everyone, but I’m loving it right now. I also e-mailed the developer with a feature request, at 4:30AM, and he e-mailed back within minutes. I probably got lucky and caught him at the perfect time, but regardless I’m impressed. Can’t wait to see what the future brings for 280 Daily.
